After Robert Sanchez collided with Levi Colwill and Gabriel Jesus in the Chelsea match, Chris Kavanagh decided not to give Arsenal a penalty.

 

When Andre Onana and Sasa Kalajdzic clashed during stoppage time during the first weekend of the new Premier League season, Wolves was wrongfully denied a penalty and the opportunity to equalize against Manchester United. Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) chief referee Howard Webb later issued an apology on behalf of the match officials for not awarding a spot-kick.

The Red Devils defeated Gary O’Neil’s team 1-0, and Webb pledged to ‘learn’ from the error. A few months have passed, and PGMOL has not demonstrated any progress following Robert Sanchez’s escape from a similar occurrence during Chelsea’s match against Arsenal on Saturday night.

Alan Shearer called the challenge “terrible,” as the Blues goalkeeper seemed to knock both Gabriel Jesus of the Gunners and his own teammate Levi Colwill. When evaluating Onana’s challenge in August, Webb stated: “Onana dives in for the Wolves player.

It’s not like two players are coming together; rather, it’s simply Kalajdzic jumping up and not into Onana. Ultimately, we declined to suggest a review.

We ought to have acted. We recognize it was a mistake made during the first week, which is obviously unfortunate. We learned from it and, of course, will make an effort moving ahead to make sure that kind of mistake doesn’t occur again.”

Shearer gave an explanation of his reasoning for thinking that Arsenal should have been given a penalty by on-field referee Chris Kavanagh on Match of the Day. The former scorer for Newcastle United declared: “Sanchez just emerged and he completely eliminates Jesus.

“The fact that he hits him in the head is crucial in my opinion. Look, here is where he goes straight through him. It’s a really difficult task. How in the world can both the referee and the VAR miss it as a penalty? He’s not even close to the ball. I don’t think they should have gotten away with it.”

Declan Rice’s long-range lob of the Chelsea keeper was Arsenal’s first goal, and Sanchez was partly to blame for it. Shearer went on, “What in the world is Sanchez doing there? I am at a loss for words. Simply remove it and clean it out.”
