Sadly, they were unable to persuade a number of players to remain. A return to England’s top division could be required if they are to maintain bringing in new players and retain their current group in the future.

A team must understand that they will lose a lot of valuable assets when they are demoted. The important thing is to make sure they get substantial and sufficient compensation for those leaving, and Southampton made sure of that. Russell Martin and his hiring staff didn’t spend a lot on new hires, and some of the additions were loans. Nonetheless, it was illogical for the team to use the funds acquired on players of comparable calibre, such as Romeo Lavia and James Ward-Prowse. The Saints would find themselves in a very tight financial spot if they spent more than £100 million on new players and were not promoted.

Currently on short-term contracts with St. Mary’s, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes might end up back at their home clubs at the end of the season.
Jones has hinted that Harwood-Bellis and Downes are likely to try to remain on at Southampton for the upcoming season. The writer continues, “They are both players who fit the type of profile the Saints are trying to develop right now.” Jones claimed in an interview with GIVEMESPORT…
“Yes, I believe that from the perspective of the player, they won’t be overly concerned with external factors influencing player contracts and other things. Nonetheless, they want Harwood-Bellis and Downes to be a permanent fixture in the club’s setup and operational procedures. And if that implies that they must succeed in getting promoted, they will recognize the pressure from outside sources that follows. Therefore, both of these players are excellent fits for the team Southampton is now seeking to assemble. Furthermore, I continue to believe that there’s a strong possibility they’ll stick around after this season.”
More players might leave Russell Martin.
Several players from Martin’s team may be considering a return to the Premier League in January, despite the fact that many of them left in the summer to play in elite leagues throughout Europe. Che Adams, whose contract expires at the conclusion of the current campaign, was strongly linked to a move during the most recent transfer window, and Everton was reportedly in discussions to sign him, according to the BBC.
Given that Adams hasn’t committed to staying at St Mary’s and signed a contract, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the south coast club make money when the winter window opens for business. Southampton may lose him on a free transfer the following summer if they are unable to persuade him to stay.
