Todd Cantwell has found himself at the centre of attention after footage emerged of him diving in Rangers’ draw at Aberdeen on Sunday.
In the first half of the 1-1 stalemate at Pittodrie, 25-year-old Cantwell threw himself to the ground on the edge of Aberdeen’s penalty area in a desperate attempt to try and help his team get back into the game.
The Dons were 1-0 up at that point with the Light Blues really struggling to get a foothold in the game.
Cantwell found himself crowded out by Aberdeen defenders as he ran towards their goal and footage from Sky Sports has shown that once he loses the ball in this case, he tries to feign contact with Ryan Duncan.
In the video clip below, you can see the former Norwich midfielder jumping in the air and then trying to flick his foot at the back of Duncan’s left calf but throwing himself forward in an embarrassing attempt to win a foul.
Chris Sutton is wrong about a lot of things with Rangers – he even accused Connor Goldson of diving to win the last-minute penalty that earned the Gers a point in the Granite City.
But the ex-Celtic striker really isn’t wrong about how embarrassing Cantwell has been at Ibrox with the midfielder regularly diving and making a mockery of the game.
After the game on 26 November, Sutton tweeted the video clip of Cantwell and mocked the Englishman for previously saying that he doesn’t simulate in order to win advantages in games.
This is as blatant as it gets. It should have been a yellow card for him but somehow Nick Walsh, who also missed the most blatant of shirt pulls on Goldson late on in the game, didn’t spot it.
Cantwell isn’t really worth the trouble he’s causing right now.
The 25-year-old has picked up double the number of bookings (6) as he has goals and assists in all competitions this season (3) and most of his yellow cards have been petulant, unnecessary and borne out of cheating.
We don’t want players like this at Ibrox.
It’s absolutely embarrassing that we have to see video clips of him doing things like this almost every single week and we’re fed up with it.
It’s no wonder his career went down the pan at Norwich when there’s clearly some sort of behavioural issue with the former England Under-21 international if he’s so willing to cheat in games that Rangers should be winning with absolutely no problem at all.
