Tennessee Volunteers player enters transfer portal

Barstool Rocky Top (Nico Time) on X: "Breaking: Tennessee DB Warren Burrell has entered the transfer portal. #VFL https://t.co/d0smq4BlIX" / XAfter several days, the first Tennessee Volunteer has finally made it into the transfer site. Senior

cornerback Warren Burrell, who suffered a decline in playing time in 2023, will consider his options as a graduate transfer.

Burrell will be eligible for one more season.

As a true freshman, Burrell—a former Georgia three-star prospect—played fast. In the end, he started the first four 2019 games while Tennessee looked for a cornerback replacement. As a sophomore, he made eight appearances in games before playing a complete season in 2021. During that season, Burrell made 12 starts, including the first 12 games Josh Heupel had in Knoxville.

His season was cut short by injury in 2022, although he was awarded a medical redshirt. Burrell went in and out of the starting lineup throughout the 2023 season as Tennessee battled secondary ailments. On the depth chart, however, Doneiko Slaughter, Gabe Jeudy-Lally, and Kamal Hadden generally outranked him.

Since Jordan Matthews and Rickey Gibson, two young players, are expected to move up the depth chart this summer, Burrell will choose to take advantage of a new chance to make the most of his last season.

This summer, the cornerback room will be interesting to watch as Tennessee rotates out a number of older players and gives some fresh, young talent a chance.
