Injury News: A key player has an ankle injury and is marked as questionable; Full-go, Alex Anzalone

ALLEN PARK — The Detroit Lions have cleared Alex Anzalone to return in Chicago, while listing fellow linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez as questionable because of an ankle injury.

Rodriguez has played in all three phases for the Lions this season. He lost his starting job at linebacker, but re-invented himself as a core special teams player who has been moonlighting on offense as a fullback. He even caught his first career pass — at any level — in the loss against Green Bay on Thanksgiving.

Then when Anzalone was unable to play in New Orleans last weekend, Rodriguez flipped back to defense and logged 31 snaps at linebacker, in addition to the 21 snaps he played on special teams. He finished with four tackles.

Other than that, the Lions are in good shape heading into a rematch against the Bears — other than placing top interior defender Alim McNeill on injured reserve of course, a move that will require an all-hands-on-deck Plan B.

“Yeah, I think that’s what some of this week has been, is who’s going to get us the best opportunity per situation,” head coach Dan Campbell said. “We’re going to have to spread the load, and that’s what you’re asking. There’s a number of guys who are going to have to take over those 70, 60 plays that Mac has been doing for us and it’s really spread out amongst a lot of guys. Could be the bigs, could be the hybrids — (John) Cominsky, (Josh) Paschal — and so everybody’s got a job to do. And there again, down-and-distance situation is going to play into that.”
