Take a wage cut…” - West Brom fan pundit discusses future of Albion player

West Brom are currently holding internal talks over the possibility of extending the contracts of several key players at the club, according to Birmingham Live.

Journalist Joe Chapman, writing in his article (14 December) shares that the Baggies are discussing the possibility of extending the contracts of players who have proven their worth to Carlos Corberan.

The report shared a list of several players who are just months away from expiring deals at the club, especially a number of youth prospects. Names include Tom Fellows, Alex Mowatt, Kyle Bartley and Reyes Cleary.

Chapman wrote: “It’s understood that the club are discussing the possibility of fresh agreements with certain players who have certainly proven their worth under Carlos Corberan.”

Not yet time

Given the number of players who are out of contract at The Hawthorns in June, it is certainly an area of pressing need for West Brom to address given the depleted squad already at Corberan’s disposal in comparison to their promotion rivals.

And despite the limited options he possesses, the Spaniard has done tremendously well to morph and mould this squad into playoff hopes.

The question remains now, if Corberan can get them that step further this season which is a question that still leaves some room for answers but it seems West Brom are certainly on the right track.

West Brom: Talks held over possible new contracts for several key players

However, the issue at the club remains their financial plight under majority shareholder Guochuan Lai and the need to get several key players off the wage bill, even despite talk of a possible takeover at the club.

There are several marketable assets in Corberan’s squad should the wage problem persist but there’s also the issue of securing some crucial players on new contracts too.

However, given the tough and congested fixture list in December, it may not yet be time to address it with so much at stake heading into the festive period. Corberan and his men cannot afford any unnecessary distractions.
