The news that Steve Cooper’s tenure at Nottingham Forest is coming to an end has finally put an end to the rumours surrounding his future. Cooper is Welsh.
Despite Cooper’s popularity among the supporters, we understand that the much-loved manager will be leaving the City Ground after Evangelos Marinakis decided to take the club in a different direction.
The Welshman has now been relieved of his duties after failing to turn the tide. This marks the end of a tenure that has mostly been successful.
In September 2021, he took over for Chris Hughton as Forest prepared to enter League One. Through an amazing turnaround led by Cooper, the team went from finishing last in the Championship to qualifying for the Premier League through the play-offs. He brought Forest back to the top division after a 23-year absence.
The 44-year-old’s employment was in jeopardy twice during the relegation struggle of the past season. Both times, the board supported him; in October 2022, they gave him a new contract, and later in the campaign, Marinakis issued a written declaration of support.
The last straw came on Friday night when they lost to Tottenham Hotspur. What the Forest supporters had to say was as follows:
Karen Claxton: Steve Cooper was treated inhumanely in light of his past actions. He has shown that he genuinely cares about Forest and has adopted the team as his own. Would prefer to keep developing with him even if it meant being demoted and then rising back up again. a depressingly sad day
It seems like the end of something truly exceptional, Stu. Naturally, I’ll be in favour of whoever comes in, but Cooper will always be special for me.
Franz: I’m sorry about Steve. Most Forest supporters adore the guy. Although he has turned them around and gotten them into the Premier League, maintaining and improving in the top division is challenging.
Cosmiic Toxic: It’s a sad day, but for a while now, the signs have been there. The year we were promoted and the year we survived will always be special to us. The atmosphere at the home game against Arsenal was fantastic.
Fornah and Smith Merchant: As a lifelong supporter of Forest, I think that this is the best course of action for the team to take going forward.
David Brinson: This is a bad choice, in my opinion. Five years ago, Nuno might have been the solution, but not now.
Kazza: Although I don’t think he’s a bad manager, you may, but he’s a first-rate person, and I don’t think we will ever see or find another manager who loves #nffc nearly as much as the supporters do.
Sean: Disgusting club, lacking class after what he did to them. Belongs in a statue, not a bag.
