Three further Bulldogs have been charged with identical violations within a day after a judge in an Athens, Clarke County courthouse reprimanded a Georgia football player for dangerous driving practices.
Rising senior , a starter linebacker and rising senior, was arrested on suspicion of racing and reckless driving on Wednesday night and was subsequently placed in jail. Police say Mondon was seen racing a gray 2021 Porsche Panamera on Broad Street, close to downtown Athens, on Wednesday night while operating a 2022 Dodge Charger. It turns out that the Porsche’s driver was a Georgia football player as well. Demello Jones, a rookie defensive back, was also accused of speeding on streets and highways, but he was spared jail time for his cooperation with the authorities. The police report that The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was able to get states that Mondon asserted he was unaware of the identity of the Porsche’s driver.
A day prior, UGA police had also detained redshirt freshman offensive lineman Bo Hughley and charged him with reckless driving in addition to counts of driving improperly and failing to keep his lane.
Running back Trevor Etienne’s hearing in municipal court on DUI and careless driving charges came in between their arrests. The DUI charges were dismissed, and Etienne entered a plea of guilty to underage alcohol possession, two other driving infractions, and no contest to the reckless driving allegation.
Judge Marcy Jolles told Etienne during the hearing, “You are a public figure, whether you realize that or not,” according to the Athens Banner-Herald, which was in attendance. People see what you do because of your position at the university. In the future, I hope you make better decisions so that you can provide a better example for those who are observing.”
Freshman Sacovie White, another player for Georgia, is facing accusations related to an incident from May in which witnesses claim he was driving dangerously the wrong way on a street in downtown Athens.
With the addition of these most recent charges, the total number of occurrences involving Georgia football players charged with driving-related offenses since two football program members were killed in a high-speed, alcohol-related collision on January 15, 2023, has now reached 19. Then, according to authorities, recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy and offensive lineman Devin Willock were killed in a race with other football team members. In one instance, Jalen Carter, an NFL football player currently, received a citation for racing.
