MP now seeking ‘urgent meeting’ with Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri
Member of Parliament for Sheffield Brightside & Hillsborough Gill Furniss has said she will be seeking an ‘urgent meeting’ with Sheffield Wednesday to discuss the unresolved HMRC bill.
Chansiri has called on fans to invest £2 million into the club in order to pay off the HMRC bill.
He has said if 20,000 fans each play £100, then that will cover everything, including the bill and player wages.
He has claimed that cash flow issues are the reasons for him not being able to pay it off himself.
Manager Danny Rohl is said to be meeting with Chansiri to discuss the issues.
It’s also said that the players and staff could yet go unpaid, with their payday set to be the last day of the month, and that Sheffield Wednesday could
also be placed under a three-window transfer embargo should these issues persist.
Local MP set to meet with Wednesday
Furniss posted on her X account (formerly known as Twitter) on Tuesday morning saying:
“Very concerning news this morning about the financial position of Sheffield Wednesday. It is the responsibility of the owners to fix this, not fans.
“I will be seeking an urgent meeting with the Club to discuss this.”
Good to see politicians getting involved
Whilst the overall news is not good, it is good to see local politicians trying to get involved in the hopes of saving a big football club and community
asset within their constituency,
It is highly unlikely that 20,000 fans would be willing to pay £100 each, and rightly so. Chansiri’s plea really is shocking.
A three-window embargo could be catastrophic for Wednesday, with them sat bottom of the Championship already. Chansiri has to sort this out as soon as possible.
