A look at the latest injury news surrounding Tottenham and Newcastle United as they prepare to go head-to-head in the Premier League.
Tottenham will play again on Sunday against Newcastle United in an attempt to turn around a dismal run of results. After losing to West Ham during the week, Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs have now lost five straight games.
Tottenham’s decline down the table has been largely attributed to injuries. The North London team went from first place to fifth and is currently nine points behind leaders and rivals Arsenal. On Sunday, Newcastle will present a significant challenge for the injury-ravaged Spurs. The Tyneside team also needs to recover from their 3-0 loss to Everton earlier in the week.
However, Tottenham and Newcastle are in similar situations aside from one player: both teams have a lengthy injury list and are unlikely to have any of their absentees return before this one. Regarding injuries, Rodrigo Bentancur will be sidelined until the new year due to an ankle problem, while Tottenham players Ivan Perisic and Alfie Whiteman are sidelined with long-term injuries. Micky van der Ven won’t be back until mid-January, and the same goes for Manor Solomon, James Maddison, and Ryan Sessegnon.
Although Eric Dier will be sidelined for a few weeks, Postecoglou expressed optimism for Son Heung-min, saying, “Yeah, we’ll see how Sonny is.” After the game, he was a little sore; we’ll have to wait and see how Sunday goes.”
Newcastle has a number of other injury concerns as well. Sandro Tonali is out due to suspension, and Nick Pope suffered a setback last weekend when he dislocated his shoulder. Callum Wilson, Elliot Anderson, Sean Longstaff, Sven Botman, Joe Willock, and Harvey Barnes are hoping to return before the end of the year, while Jacob Murphy and Dan Burn will be sidelined until the new year. While Matt Targett and Javier Manquillo are sidelined for the long run, Jamaal Lascelles may make a comeback from a dead leg.
