After the Spurs player said he would be open to returning to the team, Sporting Lisbon is now investigating the prospect of signing Eric Dier on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign.
After moving from Sporting to Tottenham in 2014, Eric Dier has started every game for the team under all of the managers the club has had.
But, as the 29-year-old nears his tenth season with Spurs, he has noticed that Ange Postecoglou, the team’s current manager, has curtailed his possibilities.
During the first five matchday teams under Postecoglou, Dier was not present. His season debut came only during the Chelsea loss, after Cristian Romero was sent off and Micky van de Ven sustained an injury.
Given that Dier’s current deal ends in the summer of next year, there has long been speculation that he may move on.
Sporting Lisbon want a reunion with Eric Dier.
Dier has shown interest in returning to Sporting in the future (SAPO). The Portuguese side is now seeking to move in that direction.
Sporting is reportedly “studying” the idea of signing Dier on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign, according to a report from O Jogo (via Sport Witness).
Sporting has “taken into account” Dier’s remarks, but his pay is the sticking point. It seems that Sporting can only proceed with an approach if Dier consents to pay less than €2 million (£1.75 million) annually.

For Dier, it would be a rather big pay cut, bringing his weekly salary down to almost £33,000. He may be able to receive more than that from an English club, or even in Italy, I suppose. Still, the lure of going back to Sporting might be enough to make the deal.
