The latest transfer headlines as Celtic and Rangers look to do business in the January window
A rare weekend off from the action has been enjoyed by Celtic and Rangers while the Premiership takes a two-week holiday. The two teams are competing against each other at the top of the division, and they are both aware that their actions during the January transfer window could have a significant impact on the fight for the championship.
As the transfer window approaches, Celtic and Rangers are both being connected to fresh additions, while players have also been linked to departures. Here, GlasgowWorld examines a few of the rumors circulating today as the two teams get ready to play again.
Man from Liverpool wanted
Caoimhin Kelleher, the goalkeeper for Liverpool, is purportedly on Brenden Rodgers’ list of objectives for a transfer to Celtic. Alan Nixon thinks the Bhoys may consider Kelleher as a viable alternative, given rumors the Reds’ number two may be eager to make a name for himself away from Anfield.
Kelleher now behind Alisson in the Liverpool starting lineup, and it doesn’t appear like that will change anytime soon. The Merseyside team is reportedly happy with their alternatives in goal. But if Kelleher insists on moving on, Celtic might be prepared to attack the Republic of Ireland international.
Joe Hart is already available to Rodgers, and Scott Bain and Benjamin Siegrist offer depth at the position.
Competition for Gelhardt arises
Joe Gelhardt of Leeds United has been linked to both Rangers and Celtic this month, but they aren’t the only teams interested in the forward. Alan Nixon claims that West Bromwich Albion entered the competition in an attempt to give the Baggies more options for attack.
Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End have also been linked, but given the Championship pair and West Brom are involved in a battle for promotion with Leeds, Rangers and Celtic may become the leading candidates for the Liverpudlian. Gelhardt has struggled for game time in the Championship under Daniel Farke, making just six league appearances in white.
Therefore, a loan transfer might be planned for this month. Leeds is hoping the 21-year-old can regain the self-assurance and form he displayed when he first appeared on the scene a few seasons ago.
