Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has discussed the upcoming January transfer window for the first time.
The chaotic events of last summer are still fresh in the mind of many Sheffield Wednesday fans.
But now, it seems like they could have another hectic, and definitely pivotal transfer window coming up with January little over a month away.
The Owls remain in last place of the Championship table and already nine points adrift, with just one win to their name and seven goals scored in the opening 16 league games of the season.
A pivotal transfer window for Sheffield Wednesday
Right now, Wednesday don’t have the required quality to get themselves out of the bottom three.
Rohl needs a miracle and his best hope is getting some new faces in in January, and the German has since discussed the upcoming transfer window, potentially hinting at some movement within the camp too.
Speaking to The Star, Rohl said:
“At the moment it is about some positions we must think about. In some positions we have five or six options and in others we have maybe one or two. It’s about balancing the squad and we will prepare for this in the next weeks, then we have to start ready for the January window.”
The Owls signed 12 new players in the summer; the bulk of whom being free transfers, with fees spent on Pol Valentin and Djeidi Gassama, and loans for John Buckley and Jeff Hendrick.
Rohl’s balancing act
Rohl is right in suggesting that this current Sheffield Wednesday side is lacking in balance.
It was hastily put together and without the proper supervision of a recruitment chief, with Wednesday well-stocked in certain positions and lacking in others.
For example, they have plenty of central midfielders but very few who can play on the wings, and they also have a decent number of strikers but all seem to be of the same mould.
Rohl needs something fresh and Wednesday’s main problem right now is goals.
A prolific striker is needed, but finding one, whether you’re a team at the top or bottom of the table, is never easy.
If Wednesday are to stand any chance of staying up then they need to recruit a striker who can contribute goals; right now, their current striking options are all robust, more physical strikers, not ones who can really run in behind defensive lines and nick a goal here and there.
But Rohl’s comments above suggest that there’s some movement needed, likely out of the club, so that Wednesday can free up space in the side to recruit and give more balance.
The loan market might come to Rohl’s rescue in January with the Owls unlikely to spend big, if at all under Dejphon Chansiri this winter, so expect the Owls to already be scouring the market for suitable players to loan in.
