Update on injuries for Vardy, Iheanacho, McAteer, and Yunus following unexpected absences for Leicester City’s victory

Leicester City team news v Plymouth: Daka starts with Vardy and Iheanacho among seven missing - Leicestershire Live

The quartet all dropped out of the squad on Saturday, with Patson Daka starting up front, Tom Cannon getting a debut, and Marc Albrighton featuring in their place

Kelechi Iheanacho, Jamie Vardy, and Kasey McAteer remain doubts for Leicester City’s clash with Millwall after their surprise absences from the big win over Plymouth.

Manager Enzo Maresca had said on Friday that he had players who were doubtful for Saturday’s game, but did not give any names. In the end, there were four senior players unavailable, with Yunus Akgun also out.

The Turkish international is the most likely to return when City go again on Wednesday night, with Iheanacho’s illness and Vardy and McAteer’s injuries potentially keeping them out for another game. Assessments will be made over the next couple of days.

“We had Kele ill and Jamie with a small problem,” Maresca said in his post-match press conference. “He (Vardy) has a small problem in his knee. Kasey McAteer has a muscle problem. Yunus is just a small thing, probably he could be with us for the next game. (The others are) doubts. We’ll see.”

The absences opened the door for a number of players to feature for the first time in a while. Patson Daka started his first game under Maresca and got himself on the scoresheet, while Tom Cannon replaced him in the second half for his debut.

Marc Albrighton was given his longest league outing of the season with 25 minutes off the bench while Dennis Praet was brought on for his first appearance since suffering a back injury in August. Then there was a league debut for Ben Nelson just a day after his new contract was signed, with young winger Tawanda Maswanhise included in a squad under Maresca for the first time.
